Hangzhou is the political, economic and cultural center of Zhejiang province. It’s also one of China’s most important destinations for tourism, famous for its natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage.
For years, Hangzhou and its West Lake (西湖; Xīhú) have been immortalized by a number of artists, writers, and poets. The city served as capital of the Southern Song Dynasty from 1127 until the Mongol invasion of 1276. Home to a population estimated to be as high as one million people, it was the largest city in the world during its prime.
Hangzhou’s wealth was derived as one of the starting points of the Maritime Silk Road. Marco Polo eventually passed through Hangzhou, describing it as “beyond dispute the finest and noblest city in the world.” In June 2011, the West Lake Cultural Landscape earned its rightful listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
As its harbor silted up over the years, a large majority of the city’s trade and industry has moved north to Shanghai. Still, the city is home to a population of 8.7 million people, and is one of China’s most popular tourist attractions. Check out some of the reasons why below to help you plan your stay after your private flight to Hangzhou.
While the city offers a wealth of natural beauty, it’s best enjoyed comfortably. It gets extremely humid during the summertime, which runs between early June and early September, making spring time and late fall visits the best time to enjoy the West Lake.
